#1061 (DEF) Rapid Fire

#1061 - (DEF) Rapid Fire

Two versions of Rapid Fire were released by Hasbro in the 1990s. The first was an ARAH figure that included a VHS tape. The figure sported an orange, lime green and blue uniform. The second, lesser known, was a 12" figure dressed in a realistic urban camoflage uniform and included an array of weapons. Dubbed as an "ultimate commando", I wanted to include this version in my "Battle Corps Month" project in 2013. However, I ran out of time, resources and motivation and the idea was shelved.

During Custom Celebration in 2018, bucky submitted a custom to the LBC contest and that gave me the inspiration to get this character done. Since Rapid Fire is decked out in urban camo, I am adding him to my DEF team. This custom has almost no paint, he is simply parts swaps.

Head: DG Duke
Torso, upper arms, legs: ROC Rollbar
Feet: 50th Low Light
Forearms: 25th Cobra Flint
Helmet, goggles: 50th Hit & Run
Backpack: ROC Elite Viper
Vest: 50th Duke

#1060 (DEF) 2000 Sure Fire

Continuing to post a few customs that I have been sitting on for awhile...

#1060 - (DEF) 2000 Sure Fire

This Sure Fire custom started as a previous custom, a Pursuit of Cobra version of Shockwave. I liked that custom, but it no longer had a place in my collection, so I decided to swap out some parts and retool it into Sure Fire. It went into my WIP pile for a while. For Custom Celebration 2018, the theme for one of the challenges was to make customs to improve on what the GI Joe Collectors Club had offered through their Figure Subscription Service through the years. Since the Club released a Sure Fire figure as part of FSS 1.0, my custom fit the bill and I took it out of the WIP pile and finished it.

The Club's Sure Fire has a few aspects that could be improved, starting with the parts selection. The figure as it was released had little in common with the original. The short sleeves, the vest and the color scheme were all aspects that I wanted to address.

Head: Retaliation GI Joe Trooper
Helmet: ROC Law
Torso: 25th Viper
Arms: PoC Shock Trooper
Legs: Resolute Duke

#1057 to #1059 GI Joe DEF

I have had all these customs finished, photographed and ready to go for a while (over a year now), but life has been so busy that I forgot about posting them. So here is my custom DEF with a couple of added team members.

#1057 - DEF Mutt

I made DEF customs of most of the main team in 2013 for my Battle Corps Month project. Recently, while sorting my customs and re-arranging my shelves, these guys got put in the "to upgrade" category. I still like the core of those customs, but they were made almost 5 years ago now before I had access to certain parts. Also, I have improved as a painter since then. For the heck of it, I took a stab at improving their builds.

For Mutt, the Kamakura legs that I originally used are not the same length, so he was always standing with one leg off to the side. Also, the shin padding was too angular. HISS Driver lower legs look more like the original figure in my opinion. Other parts that were changed are his forearms and hands, vest and hat. Color wise, he got a complete redo that more closely matches his vintage colors.

Head: 25th Mutt
Torso, upper arms: PoC Steel Brigade
Lower arms: 50th Viper
Upper legs: PoC Junge BAT
Lower legs: 25th HISS Driver
Vest, hat: Marauder MTF

#1058 - DEF Bullet-Proof

For Bullet-Proof, I liked the head and torso of my original, but the helmet, arms and legs needed an upgrade. I swapped all those out for newer parts. I also repainted the green to a darker shade and redid the camoflage pattern.

Head: ROC Ripcord
Torso, upper arms: RoC Pit Commando
Lower arms: 50th Steel Brigade
Legs: 50th Firefly

#1059 - DEF Cutter

For Cutter, the head is definitely an aspect I wanted to improve. I recently made a vintage inspired Cutter using a Marauder MTF head and cap, so I repeated that recipe here. Also, the lower arms, legs and boots were swapped.

Head, cap: Marauder MTF
Torso, upper arms: BBTS Mercer
Lower arms: BBTS Falcon
Hands, lower legs: 50th Hawk
Upper legs, knees: PoC Snake Eyes

No Numbers - DEF Refreshed: Beachhead, Barricade, Mace, Headhunters

Transformers Targetmaster Catgut

Catgut was a Targetmaster partner to Treadshot, a Decepticon Action Master. With all the wave 1 Lionizers warming pegs around here, I figured why not?

Transformers Targetmasters Tip Top and Heater

You guys know that I usually stick to GI Joe on the blog, but I have actually been collecting Transformers for longer. I got into them when Robots in Disguise (2001) as released. I started as a big time completist, grabbing everything from RID, and follow-up lines like Armada and Energon. When Cybertron rolled around I started to pick and choose what I wanted to buy. Ironically (or not), that is about the time I started collecting Joes as well. Anyway, these days, I stick mostly with Masterpiece Transformers with a few select Generations to bolster the ranks.

I wanted to complete my Titans Return Quake with his Targetmasters.

I am new to customizing Transformers. Painting TFs is pretty different from painting Joes. That is why I started small with the small Battle Masters. The types of plastics involved as well as all the tabs and parts that are used in the transformation make TFs a different challenge. I’m enjoying it and have a few more bots on my work table, so I will be posting more in the future.

Sorry for the Lack of Updates...

Hi everyone. As you can tell by the lack of updates recently, I have slowed my customizing down considerably.

I have made so many customs over the last few years that I am feeling the need for a long creative  break. On top of that, the lack of new Joe product and buzz has made it tougher to get the creativity jump started.

I have used the time away to purge excess figures and vehicles that I have accumulated over the years. Stuff that I bought for different projects that did not pan out or extras for fodder are now slowly being listed on eBay. I have been buying toys as an adult for almost 30 years now, so there is a lot to sort, organize and purge (or keep). My workshop was slowly getting buried in stuff as I was completely focused on creating new customs and spent very little time curating my collection. My goal is to continue the purge, make my collection leaner, reduce the amount of extras and set up some proper displays so I can enjoy what I have (and so I can clear up space to make new stuff...).

All this does not mean that I am done customizing. I don't see that ever stopping for good. I have a bunch of customs that have already been made for the next chapter of Resurgence. The PHX Customs gang have all been taking the same creative break, so we have delayed that project for a while.

Also, recently, I have caught a bit of a Transformers customizing bug. I have tried my hand at this a few times over the years, but have never been really successful at it. I always went back to Joes. Until that happens, I may post a few Transformers related creations. More updates coming soon I hope.

#1055 and #1056 - Topson and Redmack

#1055 - Topson

I made a custom Topson several years ago, at the beginning of the 25th anniversary. I was just getting into customizing more seriously and the Argen 7 seemed like fun customs to make with the available modern parts at the time (circa 2007).

I recently updated all my original 13 and really like the new parts recipe, so I wanted to update my Argen 7 customs as well. I changed some parts (like the upper legs) to make them different and used the same vintage helmets.

Head: 25th Clutch
Hands: Marauder MTF
Torso: ROC Snake Eyes
Arms, lower legs: DG Duke
Upper legs: ROC Neo Viper
Webgear: 25th Stalker
Helmet: Vintage Accessory pack

#1056 - Redmack

I made a custom Redmack several years ago, at the beginning of the 25th anniversary. I was just getting into customizing more seriously and the Argen 7 seemed like fun customs to make with the available modern parts at the time (circa 2007).

#1053 and #1054 - Action Force Skip and Action Man

#1053 - Action Force Skip

Over the last few years, I have slowly been building new Action Force members and updating older customs as well. For the longest time, my custom Skip consisted of a RoC Dennis Quaid head on an Ultimate Battle Pack Stalker body. It worked well for a while, but most of my Z-Force characters are now built using modern parts, so it was time to upgrade Skip. I used the same parts recipe as for my 2Para figure as the originals were repaints. I added the MTF webgear.

Head, beret, harness and pouches: Marauder MTF
Torso, arms: 50th Firefly
Legs: ROC Snake Eyes

#1054 - Action Man

Action Man is a character that I honestly don't know that much about. To me, he is one of the figures included in the Valor Vs Venom GI Joe Night Force 6-Pack. He stood out in that set as he was the only one wearing orange. Since I'm a sucker for New Sculpt era customs, I have been meaning to make this figure since I saw HypnoHustler’s excellent version during 2017's Custom Celebration. Since the Mercer torso is already orange and the head and arm colors match, there was not much painting involved on this one.

Head: Indiana Jones German Motorcycle driver
Torso: BBTS Mercer
Arms: 50th Dusty
Legs: 50th Snake Eyes
Harness: 25th Steeler
