Concept Renegade Back Up

Back Up was a concept for a Renegade on Sergeant Slaughter’s team originally conceived sometime in the ‘80s (probably circa 1985-86). In 2016, a concept drawing for the character was shown by Dan Kligensmith on Facebook. To my knowledge, that is first time that anybody outside of Hasbro learned of the existence of this concept character.

The two-week challenge for Custom Celebration 11 was to create a custom based on the 1987 movie, either Renegade or Cobra-La. I had forgotten about this picture and found it while looking for inspiration for the challenge. As it turns out, Back Up came together pretty well with modern parts. For the color scheme, no official one exists. I decided to make him an ex-member of the Steel Brigade that was reprimanded under suspicious circumstances and shipped to Sgt Slaughter to be reformed. His color scheme flows from that back story.

Spy Troops & Valor vs Venom Heavy Duty

I have a special two-for-one today.

I have wanted to make a new sculpt version of Heavy Duty since bucky and I worked on Project New Sculpt in 2014. I have been waiting for the right head to come along. In 2016, with the release of the Heavy Duty/ Stiletto 2-pack, the right parts came along. I quickly assembled a WIP. However, I could not decide which color scheme I liked best. I decided to try to make two different versions and fortunately I had all the necessary parts to make that happen. I settled on the Spy Troops and the Valor vs Venom versions.

Head, lower arms: 50th Heavy Duty
Torso, upper arms: Retaliation Roadblock
Legs: 25th Copperhead
Gauntlets: PoC Firefly
Backpack: RoC Arctic Snake Eyes

Here is another custom that I can't take credit for. This custom is heavily ''influenced'' by Stronox’s terrific Barbecue. I did make some small changes. Personally, I like the 25th gear as it is vintage accurate, so I kept it. I also gave him a removable helmet and his signature red hair. I added a holster on the right hip so he can carry a sidearm. Color-wise, I kept the clean look to match my previous customs.

Head: 25th CG Fred
Torso, upper arms, backpack, gear: 25th Barbecue
Lower arms, legs: Renegades Hazard Viper
Helmet: RoC Flash
Holster: MTF

LBC USS Flagg Deck Crew Member

This custom was made for Custom Celebration 11's 48 hour Lazy Boy Custom contest. As such, painting was not allowed. I'm submitting this custom as is. However, now that the contest is over, I may go back, tweak the recipe and paint some parts as well as make a few more crew members.

Head: Marauder Task Force
Helmet: Vintage Blowtorch
Goggles: 50th Dusty
Torso, arms, legs: 50th Duke
Vest: Star Wars Luke

I had been planning to repaint a 50th Shooter figure since the line got released in late 2016. After seeing the great concept art that was released a few weeks ago showing Shooter in green like the Original 13, that gave me the kick in the behind I needed to get it done. Before painting, I made a couple of small changes. First, I cut off that awful oversized holster on her right hip and replaced it with a Marauder one. I also trimmed a bit of plastic from her elbows to improve articulation. I toyed with replacing her head with a Marauder head. However, I decided to keep the original.

Everything: 50th Shooter
Holster, pouches: Marauder Task Force

DTC Outback

At the end of 2016, I was on a New Sculpt kick. I made several customs from that era in modern era construction. One of the figures that I had on my to-do list was DTC Outback. I'm a bit lazy when it comes to stickers and labels, so I set him aside for a later date. I was waiting for the 2016 50th line to be released to have access to his "Survival" shirt. Laziness aside, I did want to replicate the DTC version's awesome head. Thankfully, AVAC came to my rescue by offering it in his store.

Head: AVAC cast
Harness: 25th Arctic Snake Eyes
Everything else: 50th (2016) Outback

I can't take any credit for this custom. A few years ago at New Jersey Comic Con, Boss Fight Studios showed off some awesome custom GI Joe figures. One of those figures was a modern take on Breaker, GI Joe's original communications specialist. Their version was a great mix of vintage (headset) and modern (vest, armour) elements. I changed some parts from their version according to what I had in my fodder box.

Head: 50th (2015) Shipwreck
Torso, upper arms: 50th (2014) Hawk
Lower arms: PoC Duke
Upper legs: 50th (2014) Lowlight
Lower legs: 50th (2014) Beachhead
Vest: 50th (2016) Snake Eyes
Backpack, helmet, headset: vintage accessory packs

Lt Falcon

Now that Retro Toy Chest is over, I will be rolling out a few customs that I have made recently.

I believe that most of us agree that the "classic" colors Lt Falcon that was released in the 25th anniversary could be improved on. Although we have gotten a couple more modern era Falcon figures with better parts in the last few years, we still don't have a figure that combines both aspects (classic colors and modern parts). With this repaint of the recent 50th anniversary version, I'm hoping to fill that gap.

Everything: 50th (2016) Falcon

Gi Joe Resurgence Netflix Series Fancast

About two years ago, a fan of our GI Joe Resurgence project - FlixMentallo21 - contacted me. He wanted to "fancast" a cartoon based on the customs project that bucky, Dusty79 and I started in 2014. I had no idea that fancasting is actually a thing, but we agreed to go with it. Last week, he sent the link of what he had been working on.

Holy moly, it blew us all away. The time, energy and passion that he put into this project easily matches up with anything I post here and what most customizers do. In many ways, this is another method of customizing. Anyway, enough of my rambling, here is what he created:
