Alpine and Cover Girl

VvV Alpine
A few years ago, I made a Valor vs Venom Tiger Force Alpine for Project New Sculpt that I worked on with bucky. I liked the recipe for that custom quite a bit, so I decided that it was time to make a proper version 2 of Alpine. When it came time to make the head, I was inspired by MSWI’s awesome custom Alpine, so I borrowed the Retaliation Clutch idea, as well as other elements like the straps on the belt and the accessories.

Head: Retaliation Clutch cast
Torso, arms: RoC Sgt Stone
Legs: Retaliation Kwinn
Rope: 50th Storm Shadow
Harness: PoC Snake Eyes

Cover Girl
Recently, a GI Joe buddy of mine asked me to make him an updated Cover Girl. He felt that the Club version had some elements that could be improved on. This custom borrows from several recipes that talented customizers have been using for Cover Girl in the last couple of years. Even though the pool of available female parts is relatively limited, I did my best to create something different. In the end, both of us were pleased with the result.

Head: Marvel Shanna
Torso, legs: RoC Cover Girl
Arms: RoC Helix
Vest: Indiana Jones

Rock Viper

When the Pursuit of Cobra Rock Viper was re-issued in the 50th anniversary line, I was lucky and managed to pick up about 3 or 4. I don’t consider the Rock Viper to be the type of troop that needs to be army built in large numbers (like the blueshirt or the Viper), so I was satisfied with having a small squad. However, I wanted to have an officer to lead them. To build this custom, I took cues from the vintage figure like the helmet and the moustache.

Head: Retaliation Kwinn
Helmet: Raginspoon cast
Torso: 25th Major Bludd
Harness: 25th Snow Serpent
Arms: Retaliation Kamakura
Upper Legs: Retaliation Alley Viper
Lower legs: RoC Neo Viper

DTC Major Bludd

I remember a neighbor friend of mine had the original 1983 Major Bludd when we were kids and I was not overly impressed with it (Of course he lit his up with a lighter and his dad ran over it with the car, so it was in pretty bad shape), so I never bugged my parents to get one for me. After that, I rediscovered Joes around 2005, so DTC Major Bludd was my first version of the good major. I made an ME custom loosely based on this version a few years ago, but was never really happy with it. After I found a good recipe for Blackout, the Major was a definite re-do.

Head, helmet, cowl, gun: DTC Major Bludd
Torso, upper arms: 50th Hawk
Lower arms: Marauder Task Force
Legs: 25th Beachhead

Spy Troops Barrel Roll

After making my DTC Barrel Roll custom and updating my Blackout custom, I thought it was time to finally make my own version of Barrel Roll’s iconic first look. This is the one that people generally associate with the character and I had never had one in my collection. Fortunately, I picked up a loose incomplete Barrel Roll from a local toy show a few months ago intending to use some of the parts when I had a chance. Now, with ‘’not-Bombstrike’’ coming from Marauder, my recent Blackout custom and this figure, my Stalls are together for the first time in my collection.

Head, hands: ST Barrel Roll
Torso, upper arms: Retaliation Firefly
Lower arms: 25th Duke
Legs: Retaliation Flint

Spy Troops Blackout

Like his siblings Barrel Roll and Bombstrike, Blackout is arguably one of the most memorable new characters to come from the New Sculpt era. Since I was working updated versions of Barrel Roll and Marauder Task Force is releasing a ‘’not-Bombstrike’’, I wanted to get all my Stalls in a row. I made a version of Blackout a few years ago. I was never 100% satisfied with it. It was decent enough, but a lot of the details did not match up to the original. With this recipe, I’m satisfied that I have my ''ultimate'' Blackout.

Head, goggles: Spy Troops Blackout
Torso: 50th Hawk
Arms: Retaliation Storm Shadow
Legs: 25th Beachhead
Weapon: Retaliation GI Joe Trooper

A Birthday Gift for my Best Friend

This is a project that I cooked up for my best friend’s birthday. We have known each other for over 25 years and he was the best man at my wedding last year. He is crazy about kayaking. Every free minute that he has, he spends in the water. He is not a collector, but he likes to pick up kayak related statues and collectibles. He has a couple of shelves in his office devoted to those. I wanted to give him something special for his birthday, so I decided to make him a unique kayak-related custom.

I picked the figure parts to avoid chipping. The legs are ARAH parts. I don’t usually mix these with ME parts, but I needed something a bit shorter to fit in the kayak without scratching. Plus, it actually makes the figure look like him.

I wanted to present the figure and kayak in a different way, so I built custom box for it. I basically re-skinned a small box of chocolates with some black vinyl. In the bottom half, I cut out the shapes for all the pieces in some foam. I wanted the box to feel deluxe, even if it was homemade.

On the back, I printed some rapids and on the inside of the top half, I printed a background. I wanted the box to serve as a display.

It was a lot of fun to make this for him this week. I’m giving it to him tonight at his birthday supper. I’ll let you guys know if he likes it.

DTC Low-Light

After making my recent DTC Barrel Roll custom, I realized that I was only a few figures short of completing the single carded Direct-to-Consumer line-up in custom form. Prior to this, I had not even looked at this version of Lowlight for custom purposes. I figured he was too similar to the PoC/50th version to bother. When I looked again, I noticed the different colored vest, the map on the leg and other differences that, put all together, made me reconsider. I dove in and ended up with a figure that I really like. Also, I’m now one step closer to having a complete DTC collection in ME form.

Head: 50th Lowlight
Torso, arms: PoC Cobra Trooper
Legs: Retaliation Ultimate Firefly
Vest: Retaliation Crimson Guard
Rifle, goggles: DTC Low Light
